Why am I running for Lord Mayor?

I love Adelaide.

I am a first generation Australian of Dutch/French/Portuguese/Ceylonese heritage. My father, a mechanical engineer, established his engineering company in Elizabeth in the late 50s and became one of the largest employers in the northern region. Between them, my parents gave me a deep-rooted understanding of business, an adventurous spirit, commercial acumen and a love of the arts.

With a strong track record of delivering results, while managing tens of millions of dollars and hundreds of people, I have energy, passion and vision and a burning ambition to work collaboratively to make this city one of the greatest in the world.

I bring to the role of Lord Mayor a unique perspective on a capital city council, having been both an elected Councillor and a General Manager for the city, and a successful and diverse background as a small business owner, as a retailer, a restaurateur, a university lecturer and marketing executive. I have developed and delivered some of the most significant cultural events for the state, including as CEO for the Adelaide Fringe and the Adelaide Festival. In 2018, I produced the acclaimed Adelaide Festival of Ideas, exploring global ideas, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Grow, Strengthen, Create

Key Priorities

Key Priorities

As Lord Mayor I will lead our Council to grow our economy, strengthen our communities and create a dynamic city culture for people to live in, work in, visit and, most importantly, enjoy.

Keep your Cost Low

Business and residential growth is crucial for the city and as Lord Mayor, my council will continue to focus on cutting red tape and reducing costs. We will freeze the Rate in the dollar for our fouryear term, without impacting on core services and will reduce the Strata Fee by delivering waste management programs. We will reduce the cost of doing business in the City including outdoor dining.

Precincts and Main Streets

There are over 5,000 small businesses in Adelaide employing thousands of people. We will focus on our main streets, including Hutt Street and Melbourne Street, curating unique precincts and experiences throughout our city in collaboration with city businesses.

Heritage

I believe great cities are designed for people and are supported by strong diverse communities who respect, preserve and value heritage. We will increase and promote the Heritage Incentive Scheme, introduce a Heritage Rate Rebate for commercial and residential property owners who look after their heritage properties and develop a dedicated Heritage tourism strategy.

Park Lands

Our City’s park land surrounds are unique and need to be protected and celebrated. We need to complete the walking and running trails, design more places for passive recreation, wellbeing and reflection.

A Green and Sustainable City

I support investment in renewable energy and further greening of our parklands and spaces throughout the city. We will continue to deliver Carbon Neutral Adelaide and make environmental sustainability fundamental to everything we do.

City of Makers

My Council will work with the community to create and curate unique experiences and greater opportunities. We will work collaboratively to position Adelaide as the Australian epicentre of screen industries and food & wine culture. A UNESCO City of Music, we will support all our creators and makers of music – and art, tech, film, gaming, food and wine – while delivering a year-round calendar of festivals and events, and bring the magic of Christmas back to the city for the delight of every South Australian.

Smart City

I will lead a city that looks to the future and embraces the digital age, developing new technology and creating jobs for this generation and the next. Smart technology applications, Blockchain, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and the continued rollout of 10GIG… the future is here already and our council will embrace it.

Safety, Lighting and Transport

Your safety and ability to move with ease around the city is paramount. We will continue to upgrade residential amenity and neighbourhood infrastructure, progress bikeways and end-to-end cycling infrastructure, implement holistic city-wide lighting and safety strategy and design using smart technology.

Priority Projects

My Council will deliver quality outcomes on multiple projects including:

  1. 88 O’Connell Street
  2. Central Market Arcade, Market District Master Plan, China Town
  3. Hindley Street, King William to Morphett
  4. Gawler Place
  5. Hutt Street Master Plan
  6. And more…
